WIND IN THE WILLOWS – CHARACER OF BADGER
Badger is a
friend of Toad’s late father and is portrayed in the story as a wise hermit
figure.
Badger’s
character in the Wind in the Willows is of a no-nonsense gentleman who lives a
solitary life alone in the Wild Wood. He
is the oldest of the animal characters in this story and gives off a quiet
authority to everyone he meets.
Badger hates
society and avoids the conventions of society by living a removed underground
life. He doesn’t like people visiting
him unexpectedly and because of that no one dares to bother him.
Although he
lives in a reclusive way he does like people and is very friendly and welcoming
to visitors and cares very much for his friends. He is, however, unwilling to
make allowances for Toad’s behaviour but always remains optimistic that Toad’s
good qualities will eventually override his obsessional behaviour.
Even though
he hates society he is happy to help his friends, the other animals, including
Toad, and willingly helps when Toad Hall is taken over, helping them to drive
out the weasels and stoats.
