Henry C Beck and alfred h.barr jr

Henry was the first person to do a graphic representation of a geographical map that we all know to be the classic london underground map. He was a underground employee who decided to do a illustrated geometrcal map in 1933 of the different stops of the underground as the previous one was a complicated web of stops that really wasn't very user friendly. However this radical new design was so different it was soon adopted by tube travelers instantly. The reason for it being such a good design is the fact that its purpose is to help people mentally visualise the tube map. The simple geometric lines with the bright colors is easily recognisable and helps you remember certain lines.

This same design philosophy was then adapt in 1936 by alfred h.barr jr (who was the first director of the new york's museum of modern art) who decided to do a graphical diagram of how the avant- grande movement intertwined and influenced each other through time. He used ruffly the same formula just in a different case. As in those day you didn'tt have google where you can see how the different movements interacted. As for the colors and layout of the pieces though they are a composition and a art in them selfs and especially the london underground print that is a globally iconic image now.

I feel looking into this has been helpful as its given my a good idea of a philosophy behind the designs as how the mind interacts with these graphics and how you can project a certain message or image in somebody's mind. Also with me starting to do a Mandrian stye worksop map i felt it would be useful to look at these to help inform that piece.

Tea tent name and logo.

All the way through the project i have been calling it the mad hatters tea party, from the use of it in the film and book. However as i change the angle in which i was approaching my posters from a new angle looking into mainly what feelings you get from the movie and tea instead of the actual physical features i decide to make the name of the tea stall. The Teepee tea tent. Which i feel flows really well, it uses the rule of three to give it more impact when you are looking at it and saying it.  Also it sounds like a tent you could find in the story of alice and wonderland but without having it linking in with it directly, which leads to the viewer interpreting things into it. So from this what started out as a little stall is now going to be in a unusual teepee that i think potential customers if this was real would really like and find unusual. Its also fits in well with the festival vibe.

As for the logo that has been done to the shape of a teepee tent using simple colors to represent the look of a rainbow, to signify that its a bright, nice and warm place to go for some tea. I have designed the logo to work in two ways wether it is large scale to catch the eyes attention and be a focal point or on a small scale just to have the company logo on the poster. This was done by drawing the simple tent up in Adobe Illustrator then exporting it to photoshop and adding the bright colors.

teepee tent design

Heres just a rough sketch of my vision of what the teepee tent would look like if it was actually at the festival. It would roughly resemble my logo that i have previously done so that people could recognise it if they walked past it. It is brightly colored and would look great on a summers day, and catch a lot of peoples attention!

stewart hall- audience theory.

This was a piece of work i found when clearing my computer. I did it for my As level media last year when researching into magazines and different audience theories to find out how people interact with pieces of media. Which is the same thing really for my the poster i am doing as it has to follow the same principles.

Tea scratch design

This design was done as a simplistic bold piece to look like a mad man had scratched in the word tea. I feel this is really bold and eye catching for anyone walking past as it is very large and is stands out as it is in contrast to the background with the vibrant bright yellow. Its style is done to resemble that of a mad man, with the look of something scratched into a wall of some kind. I felt this have links bak to alice and wonderland with the mad hatter. Being these crazy person thats quite mystical.

design philosophy behind designs

For my designs i have kind of been getting bit lost with my designs and losing my own style. Which isn't good as the whole point about this project is to refine your skills in the area you enjoy most and for me it is graphic design. I have done posters that just lack that something to grab your attention and make you look at it. Which for the project is a major part as for my brief i was designing artwork and posters to promote the tea stall at the alice and wonderland festival. So it is important people need to be gripped by my designs so they get inspired and want to pop in to get a cup of tea.

For my designs so far though i have become more and more disinterested and distant from the project as i wasn't using the style i like and that i am really good at! This is because i have been looking at the project from the wrong angle and needed to approach it differently. I have been focusing too much on the alice and wonderland part in mimicking characters and colors from alice and wonderland. Also obviously with me doing the tea stall have gone down the mad hatters tea party route which i feel is very limiting, doing designs just with a 'hat' or the mad hatter. But to be honest it doesn't really need it. Yes it is at the festival but it doesn't need to just copy every other design, i want mine to stand out.

That is why i have tried to focus more on a feeling people have from a design and how they interact with certain layouts and colors. As a feeling is a main reason why people want to by a product but especially a service which a tea stall is. That is why i am going to look into things like propaganda and clever advertising campaigns like the old Vw adverts, as they engage people though a interest and unusual design. Leaving them puzzled and wanting to find out even more. Which is what alice and wonderland is about this kind of crazy, puzzling, dreamworld and the subconscious.

Time for tea with steam

This is one of the first posters i have done, where i have tried to follow the style that i like and find enjoyable for one, but also eye catching for my target audience to look at. The reason why i like it is that it doesn't look like a flat image and it has a bit of a depth to it with the steam coming out of the kettle, and getting bigger as it sweeps out and towards the viewer. Even this i have tried to do in a simplified bold style to fit in with the theme of the page.

As for the text i had a bit of trouble because i felt that it looked a bit boring having it on three different lines, as i originally had it. It just looked like every oner poster out there.  I then decided to change the positioning, angles and the sizes to create a more interesting focal point. However i tried to not do to many different sizes as with posters you should only have about 2 or three different fonts and size. To keep a in house style within my posters. However i know that a house style is normally associated with magazines and newspapers, but the same still applies for the poster. Because you have to have a style that flows within the poster itself but also more so if you did a series of posters.
