Bauhaus

Bauhaus is possible one of the biggest art movement of the 20th century or even ever. It was a design movement which was very key in art history. It derived from the world war one period were art and manufacturing kind of lost touch with each other due to what was happening at the time with obviously a lot of focus going into practicality and the engineering side- Like the manufacturing of machinery. The bauhaus noticed this and tried to merge the two together once again. They liked the idea of having lots of creative industries under one house. like e.g architects, graphic designers, fashion designers and textile workers. They had a philosophy of art should be simple and bold with very simple geometric shapes, wether that should be a chair, table, a poster or even a bike.

This became a very distinct style world wide due to the fact it could be easily mass produced under one 'house'. Also with its extremely simple design with broken down geometric shapes and simple primary color palette meant it was suitable for most countries and cultures.

Sadly though the design movement only operated between 1919 and 1933 as the nazi shut them down sprung the war! However the design movement still inspired a lot of art through time even today it is still a modern look. But the movement has especially inspired architectural design through the years. Including the bus interchange which is why i have looked at it a lot for my design work. The interchange has taken elements from this like the geometric shapes and sweeping lines, to fit in with the architects 1930's vision!

Heres some examples of bauhaus style architecture and other design work...

I have looked at these because for one they stand out for me visually but also i feel the style fits in quite well with the interchanges style. With the big sweeping curves contradicted by the sharp geometric shapes. This style is something i really want to show through my own design work.

Bauhaus has not only fed ideas for the bus interchange but also my alice and wonderland project. As my ideas have kind of cross referenced due to the fact i like the movement and share the same philosophy and principles behind the design. So heres some work that have looked at for alice and wonderland. The reason why i like them is because of the simplicity of the work and how it guides your eye around it. Also your eyes always drawn to the image because its is surrounded by blank natural space to frame your work.
