Old mans face

I have created a model out of clay as from when i did a quick model out of clay of Connor another member of my group i found out that i had a bit of a skill in working with clay and i found it easier and more interesting than doing the mod rock casts. So from looking at Noble & Sue Webster i decided to do a model of someones face, but for this i tried to be a bit more imaginative and instead of work from a real person i did from my imagination and what i thought a rough old man would look like. So i started off by working quickly and from my head of what generally a elderly face structure would look like, then i went back to add details and features. But just to make sure the face had as realistic look as possible i found a picture of a old man to add extra little details.

The Idea of this piece was to show a old man looking back on his life, but depending on who looks at it they will have their own means they associate with it! But also so it works on a secondary level where its just looks like a very old man at the point he is now in life. But overall i liked using the clay and although it takes a lot longer than say mod rock and i have spent 2 sessions on it. You can get a much more detailed sculpture and you have more control of what you do with it, which I feel portrays more feelings than you get with mod rock. Although i have had to leave it at the point it is now because i am a bit of a perfectionist And i am never really happy with what ever i do. But with the clay you are in danger of over working it and ruining what you have already done

The only thing that i don't like with the sculpture is that it has flaky bits where it has slightly dried out and also the fact we don't have a kiln oven so you can't cook the clay to harden which you could then paint as it becomes a hard grey surface which would also be good to project onto.

When using the clay i also followed all safety precautions by making sure it doesn't dry out and breath bits in which can harm your lungs.

The picture doesn't look as good now because the clay has dried out now and gone flakey and bitty. It really needed to be baked in a oven for it to come out profetionaly
